How Breast augmentation or enlargement is done?
This can be achieved in 2 ways, by breast implants or by fat transfer. In 1st method soft silicone gel filled implants enveloped by a membrane are inserted in a pocket created using different approaches. While some women do not prefer implants being placed. So, for them fat transfer can be done. Fat is harvested by liposuction from other body parts like abdomen, flanks or thighs. It is then processed and transferred to the breast to achieve the desired result.
Types of implants and where they are placed?
Breast implants based on their shape can be of two types, round or anatomic. Round implants provide fullness in both upper and upper poles. Anatomic implants are sloping, tear drop shaped providing more fullness in lower pole. Based on patients need they are placed either below or above the pectoralis muscle.
Breast implant can be inserted into the breast by one of the following 3 incisions:
1
Axillary
- by making incision higher in axilla.
2
Areolar
- by making semicircular incision at skin areolar junction in its lower part.
3
Infra-mammary
- by making a 4-5cm incision along the infra-mammary fold.
Dr. Nikunj Mody prefers infra mammary approach as the scars are well hidden beneath the breast and are barely visible.
In fat transfer for breast augmentation, no scars are visible as the fats are transferred using small cannula or needle.
Post-operative care and recovery:
It is usually a day care procedure, with patient being discharged same evening or next day morning. Some swelling and bruising could be for first 2-3 days. You can resume your daily activity after 2 days with normal walking allowed. However, you must avoid heavy weightlifting, jogging and gym exercises. A compression garment or a sports bra should be worn for minimum of 4 weeks to achieve better contouring of the breast. After 1 month you feel to be back to normal. You can resume all your physical activities after 6-8 weeks. The final result, when the swelling has totally disappeared, tends to take a month and a half. This is the time required for sensibility to return to the areola, and the feel begins to be softer and the body’s complete assimilation of the implant takes 2-3 months. It is very important to know that breast surgery up to the present time has not involved risks of any sort of secondary pathology and that patients should continue their normal gynecological screening. It should be noted that it doesn’t interfere with lactation.
